SAPO – Automatic System for Paintings Measurements
SAPO – measurement system project
The aim of the project was to construct an automatic measurement setup for taking panoramic 2D photographs (with variable lightning condition) and measuring 3D structure of painting. As a result of the project work the measurement stand along with its technical documentation was prepared, that allowed for automatic, non-invasive and contact-less measurement method for generating 2D and 3D representation of measured object.
The 3D measurement technology is being developed since 90’s. The advancements in automatics and current computation capabilities of computers allowed application of these methods, not limited to visualization of single objects but for measurements for research purposes on unprecedented scale.
The developed device, quickly and automatically with little financial expenses allows creating a precise digital representation of the measured painting. The documentation made this way may be used for the following purposes:
- enriching museum’s archives with new registration techniques
- verification of authenticity of painting
- introducing new methods and tools for research
- allowing the onlooker a better familiarization with the details of the painting
- presentation of the painting to wider audience
